I have the same problem for NNTP account. And it is easy to reproduce. I have Linux 2.6.32-24-generic-pae #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 10:54:21 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux Thunderbird 3.0.5
NNTP server: news.rsdn.ru login/password: bugmenot/bugmenot (or new one could be registered on http://rsdn.ru/Users/NewOne.aspx page Any newsgroup could be used for test, I recommend rsdn.test The problem is same - offline mode doesn't work.
