It is definitely capable of running a 3d environment as a guest.  I'm
using the ubuntu testdrive tool to do testing of daily ISOs so I'm not
certain what parameters that testdrive passes to virtualbox in respect
to enabling 3D effects.

I can try to manually set up a virtualbox guest with 3d-parameters and
see if the ISO will boot.
