I am having the same problem on Ubuntu lucid with documents downloaded from http://jpr.sagepub.com/content/40/2/213.abstract
In the properties window, the following fonts are listed: Helvetica Helvetica-Oblique Helvetica-Bold Helvetica-BoldOblique AGaramond-Semibold AGaramond-Regular AGaramond-Italic Courier AGaramond-SemiboldItalic All Type 1 and Not embedded The text is not readable without getting headaches because just as in the example from the bug description, the word-boundaries are not recognizable, the letters shift heavily to left and right seemingly at random...
