It appears to be deliberate that partman-md doesn't detect the RAID devices until you select "Configure software RAID" - at any rate it's always been like that and I can think of reasons why you might not want it to autodetect them (e.g. if you were about to tear down the RAID devices). However, the /dev/md/0 business is definitely a bug, specifically bug 84228.
