I've had it fail in a different way a couple of times. Symptoms are that the machine comes back but nothing is output to the screen. The monitor light changes from orange (no signal from computer) to blue but there's nothing visible. Interestingly by turning off the monitor and turning it back on I could get a glimpse of something on the screen but it doesn't last long enough for me to tell me much other than it looks like my normal desktop.
I wish there was an option to do what my MacBook does: suspend <and> hibernate. If power stays on, resume from suspend. If not, resume from hibernate. But you probably wish that, too.
