Installing the older (ubuntu Jaunty) sreadahead package after purging 
ureadahead will stop the video cutoff, and will get back most of the boot time 
penalty of having neither one installed. Possibly something to do with the 
kernel patches in Ubuntu for these?
latest kernel update as of July 19 had no effect on this issue.
