I've got the same graphics card and I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with the nouveau driver under 10.04
When I boot the ubuntu-desktop ISO I get a 'messed' up version of the desktop of a previous boot of karmic. The system locks up and the only way out is through Alt-SysRq. Even just booting to the terminal with the 'single' option to grub I get: nouveau 0000:00:05.0 GPU Lockup - switching to software fbcon I managed to get 10.04 'working' by installing it from the mini.iso, blacklisting vga16fb and nouveau and installing nvidia-current.
