Had an experience, might help you smart people track down what the
problem is:

I've been having this problem for a few days now (even though I upgraded
to 10.04 back in early may). Just formatted my / partition and
downloaded/burned a 10.04 disc today (7/18) (for a few reasons, this
being one of them). Out of the box, sound worked, boot was normal, and
I received none of the spurious response errors.

Updated everything in update-manager. activated nvidia prop. drivers
(starts at 21:21:30 in log). Without rebooting, more updates appeared
in update manager, and they were installed. Installed some
inconsequential programs and rebooted. Sound still worked. Installed
libxine1-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly and ubuntu-restricted-extras.
Rebooted again and the problem is back in spades!

I'm dubious that its the plugins or restricted-extras, so maybe like
usual it was just the luck of the draw that let me reboot ok?

Attached is tonights portion of dpkg.log (everything since the fresh
install).
