Bug has just struck me upgrading (with update-manager tool) from 9.10 to 10.04. Happened immediately and persistently from the very first login. I removed:
dpkg --remove --ignore-depends=xserver-xorg-input-all xserver-xorg- input-wacom xserver-xorg-input-synaptics ...and now my system is usable again. Time will tell if it strikes less often as other users above have reported, but this is a severe and major bug.
