Here's more detail:

I clicked on the update icon and allowed 102 new packages (120 MB) to
install. When everything was downloaded, I looked at the screen and saw
the error message I posted above.

After looking again at the message, I decided to try again but this time
"unchecking" the libc6 package a couple other files (libc6*) also
automatically were deselected. I continued the install and in a few
minutes it was complete. I went back to the update icon and in that 20
minutes there were more updates in addition to the lib6c packages (11
total). I Continued that update and in a few minutes Ubuntu asked me to
reboot to complete the upgrade. I did and everything seems fine.

Could this have been an install order problem?
