I'm not really clear about the state of your machine, but it seems like
you are past your problem. I'm going to close this report.
As for the shutdown problem, try booting from a Live CD and then
shutdown from a command line: 'sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now'.
If that doesn't work properly then file a new bug report on that
specific regression.
