So here's something interesting...
I turned the wireless switch to off and typed in

rfkill unblock 0

and now it can connect to wireless and show up correctly in `rfkill
list`

BTW, this issue stops me from being able to connect to wireless
networks.

Now to try to read up on rfkill, because that was a big shot in the
dark!
