I am having a very similar problem during shut down in a Panasonic CF-R8 with alpha 2 Maverick 10.10.
During shut down, the final screen appears, under the name Ubuntu two white dots turn into red, and it stays like that forever. I have to stop manually the computer by pressing the power button. The computer works fine with Ubuntu 10.04.
