Colin, thanks for your detailled explanation in comment 4. You didn't mention compression, though. Isn't the image written to disk compressed? If so, it's rather hard to predict, of course, but it might explain why upstream chose that "0.8" factor. Google isn't very helpful in rsolving this question, I'm afraid.
