Well, at least 16 people have this problem with Istanbul - the 15 aforementioned and me.
I found a quite crude workaround: disable sound recording in Istanbul, use the gnome sound recorder, save both files as ogg, join images and sound in pitivi (also able to edit it a bit) It works for me but it is still nuts. It should be possible to patch the packets shouldn't it. Istanbul is a nice application: simple, straight forward, integrates well into the desktop. It's a pity it has that glitch.
