Forgot to say, just in case it helps... My PC dual boots Ubuntu and WinXP via grub (gfx version). On Grub I've tried with recovery mode and get "Kernel Panic" too. I vaguely recall the error message saying something about not being able to find the partition. I'm at work now, sorry can't say more.
