FYI, I was able to overcome this problem. I am not certain however which of these two issues fixed it: - Instead of using a USB disk, I used a the CD drive to launch and install Ubuntu. - I had to set the the hard disk to AHCI (instead of IDE) in the bios, otherwise, it would was getting a 'unable to find a medium containing a live system' error message.
