I am having the same problem. It appeared on Edgy and still persists on Feisty.
Thought it had worked for a while, I don't know why it suddenly stopped. I have tried purging the packet, removing manually files and gconf schemas (on that point not sure that it was done correctly). I encountered the same problem with the various versions that I downloaded and compiled. When I add the applet on the panel, just a very thin line appear. It freezes the panel until I killall main-menu. A few times, after several minutes, I got a correct display but also frozen.
