Just a quick note, this is also affecting me, as the server pushes through a 
couple of routes that are needed to make it work. When started through 
nm-applet, the route looks like:

where 192.168.1.0 is the VPN network.

However, when connected with openvpn itself, it looks like:

where the 10.8 network is the 'connecting' VPN network.
