I was able to boot with the following kernel commandline (two of the options, fb= and BOOT_DEBUG= I got from one or the other of the older installers):
BOOT_IMAGE=/casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash fb=false BOOT_DEBUG=3 -- vga=0x376 I also chose the 1600x1200x32 video mode.
