Problem still extant - no updated comments because no-one has suggested
a fix and there are only so many 'me too' messages it is worth
posting....

Problem on Intel atom board, mythbuntu 10.04, latest ALSA drivers as of
12/6/2010 loaded & built & still there. And also on HP mini2133 but that
would at least start up.

System boots with sound off in bios or with snd-hda-intel blacklisted.
Modprobe snd-hda-intel causes a hang, with spurious responses logged via syslog
to serial. These did eventually stop after many minutes and I was able to
rmmod the snd-hda-intel module.

Interestingly cat /proc/interrupts did NOT show the sound module
associated with any interrupts although there was an interrupt line
shown with a blank where the owner should have been...

Suspect this is really a bug for the ALSA folks...
