Problem still extant - no updated comments because no-one has suggested a fix and there are only so many 'me too' messages it is worth posting....
Problem on Intel atom board, mythbuntu 10.04, latest ALSA drivers as of 12/6/2010 loaded & built & still there. And also on HP mini2133 but that would at least start up. System boots with sound off in bios or with snd-hda-intel blacklisted. Modprobe snd-hda-intel causes a hang, with spurious responses logged via syslog to serial. These did eventually stop after many minutes and I was able to rmmod the snd-hda-intel module. Interestingly cat /proc/interrupts did NOT show the sound module associated with any interrupts although there was an interrupt line shown with a blank where the owner should have been... Suspect this is really a bug for the ALSA folks...
