Yes, I was under the impression that Mutter can use software GL (Mesa). I get an error when I try to start Mutter running on an Nvidia card with open source Nouveau drivers (with glx enabled). I expect this to work, as Nouveau claims to support 2D acceleration, and in case there is Mesa. However, I get this message:
$ mutter --replace Bug in window manager: Unexpected X error: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation) serial 2142 error_code 1 request_code 154 minor_code 179) Aborted I'm not sure if this is the same bug or if I should create a new bug.
