I spent yesterday another two hours tracking the error. It looks like the issue is not related to a missing /etc/X11/xorg.conf but related to the NVIDIA driver issues to detect the screen resolution. According to: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia#Low%20Screen%20Resolutions I have defined a modeline for 1920x1200 and set the Display to use this resolution only. Since then I had no more issues with X resolution.
