I found a workaround for this. I have Lucid Lynx Ubuntu on a 5732 Z with Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset. Use 'lspci | grep VGA' to get your device address. Mine is '00:02.0' Then call 'sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=XX' where XX is a hexadecimal byte. In my case, '00' is full brightness and 'FF' is full darkness. I call 'sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=40' to make things right.
