David, If you're considering a re-install, it might be wiser to re-install to Karmic to restore brightness adjustment functionality. The brightness issue isn't related to whether it's a fresh install of Lucid or upgrade to Lucid, it is due to Lucid itself.
I've considered downgrading to Karmic but can't devote the time to reconfiguring my laptop.
