Same here except my GUI never loads. So basically this error has bricked my Ubuntu installation. I have gone into recovery mode and tried all of the options:
dpkg - fix broken packages netroot - terminal with networking grub - update grub failsafeX - supposed to boot into a failsafe version of X but just goes to a blank screen....
