This is to confirm that this dead serious. Immediately after install, I
remember being able to shutdown at least once using the indicator applet
shutdown menu option. But ever since, there has not been a single
instance when I have been able to shutdown or restart through that
route.

An additional piece of information is that desktop computers don't seem
to display this problem. They are able to shutdown/restart normally. But
it does seem to plague notebooks. Another notebook computer (Toshiba
Satellite) faces the same problem.

I would say that while at one level this may seem not such a serious
problem, but it is serious enough to stop me from switching other users
to Ubuntu, much as I would like to, because I don't see them taking this
opening terminal typing sudo halt business lightly.

Is an early solution within sight?
