This is stange, do you have the file /etc/cups/mime.types?
This file contains the mime types known to CUPS, are "application/postscript" 
and "text/plain" listed in this file?

Could you also give the output of the following commands?

$ lpinfo -v
This shows the printer devices detected by CUPS.

$ /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb
This should indicate if the usb backend supports your printer.
