Hi Toby, Sorry about the late reply. I have filed a bug report at ALSA which can be viewed at https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa- bug/view.php?id=2492. But there hasn't been any resolution.
I was originally using Ubuntu Dapper (clean installation) and right after installation there was no sound at all. Not even the login sound. I tried following all the guides out there and didn't encounter any error during the process but in the end, still no sound. So I waited for Ubuntu Edgy to be released. I also wiped out the whole hard drive (including the WinXP partition) and did a clean installation. Same story. It is still a dual boot with WinXP and the sound works fine in WinXP, which really is a shame.
