I doubt this is the same bug. Different hardware and different symptoms. My freezes happened consistently on the same spot during boot. Changing to failsafe X fixed this in Ubuntu kernel. Haven't had time to retest using a later kernel though, seems like there's always something I can't abort running in the background, so there's really never a good time to reboot...
