Toshiba Satellite a210, ATI x1200, amd64 turion t-56

Can't adjust brightness using the advice above, tried
uninstalling/reinstalling gnome power manager. It's treating my laptop
as a desktop (ie, no battery options, no dimming options).

A little help? How about a release of Ubuntu that actually works
properly without several days of pulling my hair out? Or even just an
option to downgrade to the last release? I didn't have these problems
with Karmic.
