This problems occurs if I set the following setting under keyboard preferences: System->Preferences keyboard->Layout->Options->Miscellaneous compatibility options->"Shift cancels Capslock"
When this option is enabled I cannot use remmina anymore. I have disabled the option again and everything is fine again. The reason I enabled the "Shift cancels Capslock" option in the first place was that my laptop misses an indicator (LED) for Capslock. So when in doubt it is enough to press just shift and CapsLock is disabled. But not being able to use remmina anymore is bigger pain. The tool is brilliant and I simply don't want to miss it.
