I'll throw my own example in here: I wanted to write a quick script that would pop up a "Touchpad enabled"/"Touchpad disabled" notification. I wasted an hour trying to find out how to change the notification's duration to 1 or 2 seconds, and how to make it stop obscuring more important notifications (like if I lose my connection to the wireless network, etc.).
Then I found this bug report and discovered that those annoyances were _intentional_.
