Someone in #pygtk irc mentioned that this is explained in the gtk documentation, but not the pygtk documentation: http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/stable/GtkTreeView.html#gtk-tree-view-set-tooltip-column says that & and < have to be escaped. So the problem is really in the pygtk documentation. I fixed the example (see attached). It now works fine, but it still crashes desktop effects if line 17 is commented out...
