Ok, provoked a logon freeze by not adding any parameters at boot, then rebooted with noapic to run the apport above.
On this freeze I was able to key in most of the characters in my password before the keyboard and mouse froze, it did not do the "stuck key" thing. I think the on screen clock was still running. No choice but to hold down the power button on my hardware, until the display changed to "Shutting down the computer" screen, which counted down for 60 secs then powered off. Forgot to say: mobo bios is the most recent on offer from Asus, have not done anything to video drivers, they are as delivered on 10.04 CD. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.
