This is in edgy, right? I experience exactly the same with xorg 7.1.1 and the binary nvidia driver. Using the nv driver instead all the KDE apps work at least, while the Gtk+ ones still show exactly the same symptons (text not rendered at all or only disappearing quickly after refresh).
