I did as you asked, by unchecking the "Save session for future logins" in the quit screen, after closing all open applications and logging out with it checked. Thereafter it was working OK, so not a bug. I didn't need to delete any cached files.
However the behaviour is confusing - you have to remember to close open application files, exit with "save session" clicked and then log back in and exit with it unchecked - it should be possible to just clear the session immediately by unchecking the box in the quit screen.
