Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wget
I've been trying to wget a file in a bash terminal, whilst behind a
proxy. That proxy is set via the gui in system > preferences as a 'http
proxy', 'use for all protocols' & 'apply system wide'.

I have tried setting the http_proxy environment variable, using the
--proxy=on setting, adding similar options to ~/.wgetrc and copying
/etc/wgetrc etc. etc.

None of this works.

However, if I ssh to localhost and then try it, it works, first time,
every time, no messing.

What setting is telling wget not to use a proxy? Why does everything
work fine for apt, synaptic, etc. etc. but not wget on the command line.
Why does wget work when i ssh!
