This happened for me in i386 Ubuntu 10.04. After usual desktop usage I noticed that the session menu is invisible and not clickable. No hibenating etc is involved. When moving the applet the empty space follows. Clicking right mouse button on the empty space opens the panel's menu. I'm able to access the session menu by selecting visible section of the applet and then moving to session menu with arrow keys. When the session menu is accessed the applet still doesn't paint correctly.
