here's a hack that worked for me with ath5k driver on LinuxMint kernel
2.6.31-14-generic. It's only for those who'd connect to an unencrypted
network.

In my case, my AP was associating only to be immediately disassociated
again. Since wpa_supplicant seemed to be getting in the way, I disabled
it. CODE:

cp /etc/dbus-1/system.d/wpa_supplicant.conf
/home/myname/backup/etc.dbus-1.system.d.wpa_supplicant.conf
sudo rm /etc/dbus-1/system.d/wpa_supplicant.conf
