Same here in gaim and gimp. Both those things were already checked, but it seems anti-aliasing was not enabled anyways (at least for GTK apps, everything works fine in all my apps other than gaim and gimp). Changing a setting in the anti-aliasing settings (I changed the hinting style, but I'm under the impression that it doesn't matter, just change something so you can apply the settings) and hitting apply fixed it.
