I ran Lucid alpha/daily installs since about January IIRC, and am 99% sure that the flicker problem first occurred with kernel image 2.6.32-16 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8942276&postcount=9). It's possible that the problem has been fixed upstream in 2.6.34 (or .33 even), but if you're looking to find the culprit, there will be far fewer differences between the two Ubuntu packages of 2.6.32-15 and 2.6.32-16, than a complete different kernel version.
