You don't need to run update-alternatives --install. In fact, that's
actively BAD, since it installs more alternatives when you run it. (Or
it might just replace existing ones, either way, it's bad, and you don't
need to.)

sudo update-alternatives --config python -> switch to 2.6 and then run
'dpkg --configure -a' (without the quotes)
