I was just fiddling with Debian Squeeze trying to figure out an unrelated issue but it required my changing from legacy grub to grub2, and IMO their approach at this is much safer and saner. I posted a screenshot in this thread at the forums (post #16):
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9305905#post9305905 My shot: http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=157072&d=1273960112 A shot of the typical Ubuntu behavior (same thread post #1): http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=155778&d=1273197137 You'll see they only display the drive designations rather than both drive and partition designations. I do realize that in rare occasions when someone does require grub on a partition they'll have to resort to CLI, but I think that's a much wiser approach.
