Public bug reported: I am using a Dell E6500 Latitude laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 installed. The disk is built with an unused partition for possibly loading a windows OS in the future. When the system powers up, it gives a grub loading message and proceeds directly to loading a default linux kernel without displaying a list of kernel choices (i.e., the grub loader menu fails to come up).
I expected the grub loader menu to come up. It did not. If I install an upstream kernel that should add an entry to the grub loader menu for the new kernel, the grub loader menu still does not come up and permit selection of the new kernel or the original kernel. This problem never occurs when an existing windows partition is present on the disk at build time. Since linux normally offers several boot choices, this is a defect in the boot sequence and needs fixing. This problem also occurs for ubuntu 10.4. The structure of the /boot/grub directory is radically different from the 9.04 release so it is confusing to see causes. The 9.10 /boot/grub directory fails to have a /boot/grub/menu.lst file which I would expect to see present.
