I had a quite similar problem which i think is related to that Starting cairo-dock without -e xfce, everytime i inserted some removeable media, i was asked if it should be mounted even if it was already.
With cairo-dock -e xfce the mounted drive show the correct disk-usage and opens properly in thunar. Perhaps the desktop environment detection is not working.
