@Ed S - just noticed your response. For me I've got Gwibber working. It appears (from my side of things) to be dns related. If I try to use it with my home dns server then gwibber has the problems above.
However if I open a VPN to work (and therefore use the works DNS server) then Gwibber runs perfectly.
