Michael,

I've never heard of that happening before.  It sounds like a font
configuration problem - maybe you have your antialiasing settings turned
off in Gnome?

It seems unlikely to be a problem with the gtk-qt-engine, but just to be
sure could you try using another GTK theme and telling me if it still
occurs?  You can change your GTK theme under "GTK Styles and Fonts" in
the KDE control center.
