(Sorry for the delay, was out of town.)

Last night, the problem appeared to have disappeared.  At first, I
thought it was because the wireless card (which requires a binary
driver) had been removed.

That was when I found out the problem is most pronounced in, for
example, the gtksu and gdm dialogs.  Even without the card in, the
problem pops up.  When I'm typing in gnome-terminal, everything seems
fine.  Other times (e.g. firefox url bar), the system seems to have
trouble seeing what I'm typing.

I've attached the two files as requested with a 20s interval.  During
the interval I tried to type a password for Synaptic.
