I took a closer look at dist-upgrade.log and found that the last entry in that logfile is "DEBUG The package 'linux-image-2.6.10-5-386' is marked for removal but it's in the removal blacklist ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'A essential package would have to be removed' "
